PROVINCETOWN — After spending more than a decade developing and promoting the images of corporate clients as a marketing director, João de Brito decided to focus his artistic talents solely on creating images that would speak to the human heart.

Although he sculpts and works with ceramic, he favors painting and incorporating his Portuguese roots along with influences of French fauvists and California impressionists.
He likes to use vibrant colors to unleash his creativity in landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes on canvas, inspired by memories of his homeland of the Azores and scenes from the East and West Coasts and many places he has visited abroad.
“In my work I seek to incorporate an understanding of the topography, sea and people during my paint visits, I try to evoke the viewers on a visceral level to enjoy my paintings now and in the future,” said de Brito.
Born in Vila Franca do Campo, S. Miguel, he immigrated with his family to New England in the 1960s, before settling in California.
This week he will be back on the East Coast for the inauguration of the exhibition “New Horizons” featuring his paintings at the Thanassi Art Gallery in Provincetown, as the town’s welcomes the Portuguese Festival through June 27. The opening reception will take place today from 6 to 9 p.m.
“The paintings will be on display throughout the year,” said de Brito. “It’s named New Horizons because I am trying to give a little color to the world, to give it hope.”
DeBrito, who studied art in Europe, has seen his work featured in galleries and museums around the world.
He has just returned from an extended painting tour and exhibit in Costa Rica and Europe. This is the tenth he returns to Cape Cod inspired by its natural beauty.
He says he likes to come here to paint because there are no distractions, he loves the colors, peacefulness, the sounds of the waves, nature and the summer weather.

The Thanassi Gallery is located at 234 Commercial St., Provincetown.
